Addressing Their Challenges and Supporting Their Future
The Challenge
Every day, thousands of veterans return home to face a new battle—one for their mental health, dignity, and future. Transitioning from military to civilian life comes with significant challenges. Veterans often experience healthcare access issues, struggles with affordable housing, difficulty finding stable employment, and mental health challenges like PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
The statistics are a sobering reminder of how much help our veterans need:
- One-third of all homeless adults are veterans, many of whom served in war zones.
- PTSD affects veterans at higher rates than civilians. An estimated 29% of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD.
- Homelessness among veterans increased by more than 7% in 2023.
- On an average night in 2023, 20,067 veterans lived in shelters, while 15,506 veterans had no shelter at all.
- 76% of wounded veterans experience chronic pain, and 80% report sleep issues.
- In a recent survey, 29% of wounded veterans admitted to having suicidal thoughts in the last year.
Veterans have sacrificed everything for us. It’s our duty to support those who have bravely served our country. The good news? You can help veterans today through the work of veteran support charities.
The Solutions
To address this crisis, we need a two-pronged approach: meeting veterans' immediate needs while also tackling systemic issues. Here's a roadmap for solutions:
Step 1: Expand Access to Healthcare
- Ensure veterans have affordable and accessible mental health care and treatment for physical injuries.
Step 2: Provide Affordable Housing
- Develop affordable, permanent housing for veterans and expand temporary housing solutions.
Step 3: Promote Career Services
- Offer vocational training, job placement programs, and access to continuing education so veterans can build stable, rewarding careers.
These steps create a foundation for improving the lives of veterans, ensuring they receive the dignity and support they deserve.
